Basketball. Several Breton competitions frozen due to covid-19

In Brittany, the basketball bounces less and less high. While sport, in general, is facing the fifth wave of covid-19, with postponements of meetings, basketball has no choice but to take a break, for some age categories.

It is a choice to which the Costa Rican committee had to make up its mind, which met Thursday evening and took the decision to postpone all the departmental matches for the weekends of January 15 and 16 and January 22 and 23, from categories U9 to U17-18.

And it is not the only Breton department to adopt such a drastic measure. Like Landerneau Bretagne Basket, which listed 17 meetings canceled among its teams due to cases of covid-19 in one weekend, the Finistère committee is also suffering from the situation. Thus, the U9 and U11 competitions have been suspended until February 26. “Currently, due to covid-19, clubs are struggling to have sufficient numbers. They can, if they wish, continue training, but we also prefer to avoid mixing, ”explains its president Anne Madec.

Morbihan resists

In Morbihan, “the proportion of matches postponed from U9s to U15s is one third. In U18 or U20, around 20% of matches are not played. As soon as there is a suspicion, contact case or case of covid-19, the match is postponed”, specifies Georges Didrick, president of the departmental committee.

Is a competition freeze as in neighboring departments possible? “The goal is first of all not to take any risks by taking the maximum number of precautions, rebounds the leader. If people play the game, why not play? (…) Today, there is a federal protocol, validated by the Ministry of Sports and various health authorities. We apply it as best we can by trying to allow our young people to play in the best possible security conditions.
