An infinity screen for the Super Bowl

An immaculate field, stands for 70,000 people and a huge screen suspended in the heights and shaped like an oval that seemed to be taken from a video game.

With 6,500 square meters of luminous surface and almost 1,000 tons of weight, the largest screen in the world of sports is in Los Angeles. It’s called the Infinity Screen and it’s part of the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which will host the Super Bowl in February.

The Infinity Screen was created by HKS and Samsung and crowns SoFi Stadium, the brand new stadium where the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers have been playing since 2020 and which will host Super Bowl LVI on February 13.

For years, there was a fascination in the United States with building the biggest screen possible in sports venues. Also called “jumbotron”, these huge devices were a key part of the entry of audiovisual technology in sports events.

The SoFi Stadium, a project of 5,000 million dollars and that intended to mark an era in terms of ambition and innovation, also entered that competition to create the most gigantic mega-screen ever seen in sports and there came The Infinity Screen.

It has 6,503 square meters of surface, 109.7 meters in length and 997.9 tons of weight, according to data provided to Efe by those responsible for the stadium, the NFL assured in July 2020 that it was “the largest video screen in the Sports world”.

“It’s three times the size of the Dallas Cowboys, although it’s not like we’re competing with them on that…” Kevin Demoff, the Rams’ chief operating officer, quipped in 2019 on CNBC.

In this, this executive of the Los Angeles franchise was quite right, since size is not the only thing that matters on this impressive and fascinating screen.

AN OVAL TO SEE EVERYTHING

Unlike traditional flat screens on the sides or those that are shaped like a cube and are located in the center, The Infinity Screen is a stylized and large oval whose limits practically coincide with the lateral and back lines of the field.

This striking shape would be something only for the gallery if another fundamental feature of its design was not taken into account: it is a dual screen that can be seen both on the outside and on the inside.

“The players, the teams on the wings and the fans sitting in the lower ring of the stadium see the interior of the screen (…) while the spectators in the upper rings see the exterior panels of the video scoreboard,” Samsung explained in a statement. communicated last July.

This 360-degree and immersive conception of the screen, which is suspended 37 meters above the pitch, is supported by a large technological deployment that includes 260 speakers and 80 million pixels whose centers are separated from each other by 8 millimeters. .

All of that makes Rams and Chargers games now have an impressive audiovisual aspect for replays, graphics, statistics and all kinds of images during the games.

But this screen also available for other stadium uses. For example, the American DJ Kaskade took advantage of it a lot for his show during the first massive concert that was held at the SoFi Stadium.

The stadium has become the great symbol of the NFL’s return to Los Angeles in 2016 after more than two decades of absence.
