The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has announced the new world rankings after the completion of the first window of the Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers. Turkey, which fell to the 16th place in the previous ranking, maintained its 16th place even though it increased its score from 487.7 to 495.2.
Strong results in the qualifiers led to changes in the FIBA World Rankings, notably for Lithuania, Belgium and Sweden in Europe, Ivory Coast and Cape Verde Islands in Africa, and Saudi Arabia in Asia.
Lithuania moved up one place above Italy in 8th place, Belgium moved up 2 places to 36th, and Sweden from 57th to 51st.
The biggest move in the world rankings was made by the Cape Verde Islands, which rose from 100th to 74th as semi-finalists in the FIBA AfroBasket last summer. In Asia, Saudi Arabia moved up 8 places to 79th place.
Four years after the introduction of the new rankings, men’s national team basketball enters a new cycle leading to the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, while the regional weights (C) taken into account in the points calculation have been adjusted based on their regional performance in world-level FIBA competitions over the past eight years.
