Toronto FC in MLS: Why Do Canadian Teams Play in American Leagues?

On the US border, but on Canadian territory. Although Toronto is part of Ontario and therefore Canada, the main teams representing the city are part of the American leagues.

Among them, of course, also the Toronto FC that a few years ago saw Sebastian Giovinco as protagonist and that soon could see another Italian like Lorenzo Insigne among his ranks. Who, of course, will play in MLS. And not in the Canadian league.

WHY DO CANADIAN TEAMS PLAY IN MLS?

Toronto is not the only Canadian franchise that is part of the MLS: there are also the Montreal Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The reason these teams are part of the American league is simply for business and visibility. The system of American leagues allows in fact to ‘affiliate’ franchises, which are not independent companies as happens in most leagues in Europe.

In this specific case, Toronto FC, registered in 2007 after having been founded and made official in the previous two years, was the first franchise to join the American league, following the example of what happened in the previous decades in other major sports.

CANADIAN TEAMS IN AMERICAN SPORTS

Football is not a rare exception, as Canadian teams are quite common in American sport.

The Toronto Raptors in basketball, for example, entered the NBA in the 90s and even became NBA champions in 2019. In the 90s there was another Canadian franchise: that of the Vancouver Grizzlies.

In MLB, the baseball league, there are the Toronto Blue Jays, while in the NHL (ice hockey) Montreal and Toronto are the two most successful teams. Canadian cities Edmonton and Calgary also have their respective teams in the NHL.
