Guatemalan athletes fought and earned a place among the best in the world. Thank you for putting the name of Guatemala up high!

Guatemala was represented by 24 athletes in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which due to the Covid-19 pandemic had to be played this year.

The participation of the Guatemalan delegation was outstanding, they won a place among the best athletes in the world and had the people of Guatemala on the edge of his seat with his performances at Tokyo 2020.

Among the most outstanding performances were those of Kevin Cordón, Luis Carlos Martínez and Luis Grijalva, who earned a place among the best in the world in their respective categories.

A total of 24 Guatemalan athletes participated in the summer jousts, here is a summary of how their participation in the Olympic Games was broken down:

  • Kevin Cordón (badminton): He was fourth after losing to Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the bronze medal match.
  • Luis Carlos Martínez (swimming / 100 meters butterfly): he was seventh in the final with 51.09 seconds.
  • Luis Grijalva (athletics / 5,000 meters): he finished the final in 12th position out of 16 athletes with a time of 13:10:09 minutes and achieved national and Central American records.

  • Nikté Sotomayor (badminton): fell in the group stage after losing to Canadian Michelle Li and Slovak Martina Repiska
  • José Ramos (judo / -60 kilograms): was eliminated in the round of 32 by the Ukrainian Artem Lesiuk with an ippon (full back against the mat) in a competition that lasted 2 minutes and 28 seconds
  • Jennieffer Zúñiga and Yulissa López (rowing / pair light weight double pair): they were last of the final C to occupy a final position of 18 of 18 competing countries
  • Juan Ignacio Maegli (sailing / radial laser navigation): finished in box 19 out of 35 competitors with a total of 149 net points
  • Waleska Soto (shooting with hunting weapons / olympic pit): finished 23 of 26 competitors by knocking down 113 plates in five rounds
  • Adriana Ruano (shooting with hunting weapons / Olympic pit): finished 26 of 26 competitors by knocking down 110 plates in five rounds
  • Charles Fernandez (modern pentathlon): he finished in box 27 of 36 pentathletes after adding a total of 1,346 points.
  • Gabriela Santis (swimming / 200 free): She was third of her heat eliminatory, but she could not enter the semifinals when she was in the 27th box of 29 swimmers with a time of 2:07:24 minutes.
  • Isabella Maegli (Sailing / Radial Laser): it was 29 out of 44 participants with a total of 218 net points.

  • José Calel (athletics / 20 kilometer walk): It was 30 with a time of 1:26:55 hours, and was 5:50 minutes away from the leader and Olympic champion, the Italian Massimo Stano
  • Juan Ramón Schaeffer (shooting with hunting weapons / skeet): He was 30th out of 30 competitors with a total of 117 targets knocked down in five rounds
  • Uriel Barrondo (athletics / 50 kilometer walk): finished in position 34 with a time of 4:08:34 hours. He was 18:26 minutes behind the leader and Olympic champion, the Polish Dawid Tomala
