MADRID.
The Davis Cup will undergo a new evolution in 2022 with four venues for the group stage, instead of three as in 2021, and the quarterfinals, semifinals and final in a neutral city, still to be decided, the organizers announced this Sunday.
The new final phase will be reduced from 18 to 16 teams as announced a few months ago and those 16 teams will be divided into four groups, of which the first two of each bracket will access the quarterfinals.
Asked about the future headquarters of this knockout phase, when rumor has it in the tennis world that it is Abu Dhabi, the CEO of Kosmos, the promoter of the new Davis team, Enric Rojas, stated that “we have a preferential option that we are negotiating, but nothing has yet been signed.”
Organizers they hope to announce it “in the next few weeks”added Rojas, at a press conference in Madrid together with the president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), David Haggerty, before the final of 2021.
Regarding the four cities destined to host each of the groups, “A call will be made to present candidacies in January” and “in mid-March a decision will be made,” said Rojas, specifying that he was “looking for agreements of three to five years.”.
There is an essential criterion and that is that in each host city, one of the four teams in the group has to play at home.
