Tennis player Manolo Santana dies at the age of 83

Manolo santana, legend of Spanish tennis, ha dead this Saturday in Marbella at 83 years. The former Madrid player, a pioneer of this sport in Spain, won four Grand Slam tournaments: Roland Garros in 1961 and 1964, the U.S. Open in 1965 and Wimbledon in 1966. He was also Olympic champion in Mexico-68 and silver in doubles, when tennis was an exhibition sport at the Olympics. In 1984 he was accepted as member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Officially retired in 1980, he later continued to be associated with the world of tennis as a tennis player coach i tournament promoter. He was captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team in two stages: 1980-1985 and 1995-1999. Plus, it was director of the Mutua Madrid Open tournament since its first edition, in 2002, and is now its honorary president. The central court of the Caixa Màgica, the venue of the tournament, was named Manolo Santana Stadium.
