Tennis: Félix Auger-Aliassime, 11th in the world, a superb Christmas present for the Open Sud de France at the Arena

The very young (21 years old) 11th in the world who has just been elected “Canadian player of the year” by Tennis Canada, has formalized his commitment for the 12th edition of the Open Sud de France which will be held from January 30 to 6 February 2022 in Montpellier.

After a 2021 vintage of very high quality (Goffin – Bautista Agut final) but … behind closed doors, the Open Sud de France is setting off again on a tempting basis. After the agreement of a triple winner, Gaël Monfils (2010, 2014, 2020) who has just achieved first place in the French ranking (after 2011, 2017 and 2020) for the 4th time in his career (after 2011, 2017 and 2020) at 35, Sébastien Grosjean struck even harder on Christmas Day 2.

After the signing of the Parisian, current 21st in the world, the director of the event has indeed recorded that of Félix Auger-Aliassime who is 11th in the world after having provisionally entered the Top 10 some five weeks ago. A very committed player, Félix launched the #FAAPointsforChange project in early 2020 which earned him, for each point scored in an official match, to donate $ 5 to the EduChange program, managed by the humanitarian association Care International, which funds education in the Kara region in Togo, the country of origin of his father. He is supported in this action by the BNP Paribas group, which adds $ 15 to each point scored ($ 20 therefore in total per point scored).

High point of its year 2021,
this semi-final at the US Open

Resident of the Principality, Félix Auger-Aliassime who went “pro” in 2017, already has several records to his credit: youngest player to have appeared in the Top 800 and first “2000” (his year of birth) to have a world ranking. In 2021, if he was beaten in the 1st round at Roland Garros, he also managed a nice group shot: 1/8 final at the Australian Open, 1/4 final at Wimbledon, finally and especially semi-finalist at the US Open. A finalist eight times on the circuit, including two finals during the Masters 500 in Rio (2019) and Rotterdam (2020), Félix (1.93 m) is therefore looking for a first victory …

The public of the South of France Arena had already seen it at work in January 2020, shortly before the Covid came to settle … But the seed n ° 5 who had been a beneficiary of a wild card, had lost in the second round against the French Pierre-Hugues Herbert (7-6 7-5). No doubt that the one who has already offered the scalps of Federer, Tstitsipas (2 times), Zverev (winner in 2017), Berrettini and Schwartzman while they were in the Top 10 will be keen to shine. Gaël Monfils and Félix Auger-Aliassime, two 1.93 m under the gauge, fourteen years apart but also and above all two real talents on the world circuit, the Open SDF is presenting itself rather well.
