Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 27) suffered a surprising defeat in the Davis Cup quarter-finals against Croatian Borna Gojo (ATP 279) on Monday. Can Jannik Sinner turn things around?

Sonego lost in the Pali Alpitour Arena in Turin after 3 sets and a playing time of 2:21 hours with 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 2, 2: 6. This means that Croatia is in the Davis Cup quarter-finals against Italy after the first match 1-0 lead. In the first set, the Azzurro was now leading – also thanks to a break to 3: 1 – 4: 1. When the score was 4: 3, Sonego had to give up the serve. Then both of them carried out their own service, the Croatian got the upper hand in the tiebreaker.

In the second set Sonego was able to fight back thanks to two breaks. In the third set Gojo broke twice, including in the last game where he was able to convert the first match point. Now Jannik Sinner is challenged. The young Sextner (ATP 10) meets Marin Clic in the 2nd match (from 6.45 p.m.). Another defeat would mean the end for the Azzurri. If the South Tyrolean wins, there would be a decisive double later. The victorious nation can then go to the semi-finals in Madrid.
