Six pioneers challenge masculinized sport

“When I ran in the 2017 elections, a member asked me if women could be presidents,” said Mercè Roser Pérez Quintana, 55, president of the Barcelona University Club (rugby). She is one of the six women among the 100 presidencies of the most important sports organizations in Catalonia. The other five are Itziar Ruedas Retuerto, from the Iluro Hockey Club in Mataró; Lídia Martí Garbayo, from CD Terrassa (field hockey); Mònica Balsells Pere, from Reus Deportiu; Mercè Rosich Vilaró, from Club Atlètic Manresa (athletics), and Helena San Martín Cervera, from Club Tennis Barcino. The remaining 94 clubs are presided over by men. “At that moment I responded in a bad way, but what I liked was that before I said anything, the rest of the members in the room were thrown at him,” continues the BUC president.
