Serena Williams’ last time on a tennis court was during Wimbledon 2021. It’s not a particularly sweet memory for her: she retired due to injury when her debut against Aliaksandra Sasnovich made it 3-3 in the first set. Since then, the American (in position 41 of the world ranking) was away from the courts and, for now, will continue to be.
The American confirmed her withdrawal from the Australian Open 2022 and the reasons are quite simple: “Following the recommendations of my medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the next Australian Open.”
“Although it is not an easy decision to make, I am not at an optimal physical level to compete. Melbourne is one of my favorite cities and I am looking forward to playing the tournament next year.
