Referee harms Indonesia, Shin Tae Yong asks for VAR in AFF Cup

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Coach Indonesian National team Shin Tae Yong emphasized that his team should have received a penalty against Singapore in the semifinal first leg AFF Cup. Therefore, he considered the AFF Cup to need a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

In a press conference ahead of the second leg, Friday (12/24), Shin Tae Yong highlighted the leadership of the referee in the first leg. The main thing that was highlighted was the incident when Ricky Kambuaya was dropped in the forbidden box.

In addition to the Indonesia vs Singapore match, the Thailand vs Vietnam duel did not go unnoticed by Shin Tae Yong.

“It was a 100 percent penalty but a free kick was awarded. Vietnam should also have received a penalty, but it was not awarded.

“To improve the quality of this tournament, it is necessary to improve more quality, referees and also VAR,” said Shin Tae Yong.

In Shin Tae Yong’s view, the presence of VAR will minimize referee errors because there is an opportunity to review incidents that occur on the field.

“In my opinion we really need VAR. As humans, we can’t see exactly 100 per cent. Even if a player is at 100 per cent, the referee can destroy everything.” said Shin Tae Yong.

Indonesia will face Singapore in the second leg of the AFF Cup semifinals, Saturday (25/12). The duel between Indonesia and Singapore ended in a 1-1 draw, so the chances of both teams to qualify for the AFF Cup final are still the same.
