Tennis player Barbora Krejčíková won two awards in the WTA poll after her life season. This year’s clay winner Roland Garros became the player with the greatest improvement and with Kateřina Siniaková they are the best doubles pair of the season.
Krejčíková was also nominated for Player of the Year, but for the second time in her career, she became world number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia. The newcomer of the year is the sensational US Open champion British Emma Raducanu and the Spaniard Carla Suárez received the award for the return of the season.
Twenty-five-year-old Krejčíková already has three WTA awards. Together with Siniaková, they became the best doubles pair in 2018. The Czechs received an individual award after ten years. In 2011, Petra Kvitová became the player of the season and received the award for the greatest progress.
Krejčíková entered this year as the 65th player of the WTA singles, but gradually climbed to the post of world number three and finished the year as fifth. Thanks to three titles, in addition to winning the Grand Slam trophy from Paris, she won earlier in Strasbourg and then in Prague at Sparta in Stromovka. For the first time, she qualified in singles for the prestigious Champions Tournament.
Among the candidates for the award for the player with the greatest improvement, the trustee Aleš Kartus took precedence over the Spaniard Paula Badosa, the Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the Tunisian Ons Džabúrová, the Estonian Anett Kontaveitová, the American Jessica Pegulaová and Maria Sakkariová from Greece.
Krejčíková and Siniak had a successful year in the doubles. They celebrated the Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and previously dominated the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne and Madrid. In the summer, they rejoiced in the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo and ended the season with a triumph at the Champions Tournament. Siniaková finished the year as the world number one doubles and Krejčíková is number two at a minimum.
In the coming polls, Krejčíková is one of the favorites for domestic prices. He will most likely win the Golden Canal and have a chance to control the Athlete of the Year.
