Football: Gladbach runs into a historical debacle

According to the statistics service provider Opta, the Freiburg team was the first team in league history to score five goals in an away game within the first 25 minutes. At the same time, Breisgau’s 6-0 after 45 minutes was the highest half-time lead of a team since April 29, 1978 – at that time Gladbach led in the Fernduell for the German championship against 1. FC Köln even at the break 6-0 at home against Borussia Dortmund (Final score 12: 0). Never before since joining the league had the Freiburg team scored six goals in one game.

For Mönchengladbach the 0: 6 meant the biggest deficit in a Bundesliga game at break. Before that, it was a 0: 5 against FC Bayern Munich in 1979 (final score 1: 7). The last time they conceded more than six goals in a home game was the 8-2 draw in October 1998 against Bayer Leverkusen. There had only been six goals conceded in one half for a home team – in September 1964 Dortmund led 6-0 at FC Schalke 04.

Gladbach coach Adi Hütter experienced a historic debacle with his team

It was precisely in this game that Stefan Lainer made his comeback after recovering from an ankle injury and a break of several months. Like its colleagues, the ÖFB-Internationale did not have a good day, it was replaced after half an hour. Lienhart was in action until the 82nd minute.

Hütter drawn after the game

Hütter was clearly marked after the game. “First and foremost, we have to apologize for our appearance today, which is also unacceptable,” said Hütter. It was only eight days ago that it set a 1: 4 against Cologne, but according to sports director Max Eberl, the coach question does not arise. “It means going through thick and thin.” Previously, Hertha BSC had won 2-2 at VfB Stuttgart at the premiere of neo-coach Tayfun Korkut.
