Football: Freiburg winters in third place in the table

Freiburg thus brought back memories of the historic 1994/95 season, when the sports club took third place both at the winter break and at the end of the season. However, this place in the table had no Champions League status at that time, at that time only the champions qualified for the then even more compact premier class.

Shortly before the ten-year service anniversary of Freiburg coach Christian Streich on December 29th, Vincenzo Grifo (32nd) scored with a penalty and substitute Kevin Schade (84th) for the hosts. Goalie Lukas Hradecky did not cut a good figure in the winning goal. For Leverkusen, the goal by Charles Aranguiz (45th + 2) was too little. The Werkself, still without the convalescent Julian Baumgartlinger, slipped from third to fourth place before the Christmas break.

Kevin Schade secured the Freiburgen three points with the late goal

“We played an excellent game against an excellent Leverkusen team and deserved to win,” said Freiburg captain Christian Günter, adding: “When you have 29 points and third place in the table, you can only be satisfied. We didn’t have a bad game. The crew is hungry. We want to stay hungry in the second half of the season. “

Modeste shoots Cologne to victory

Again three points behind in eighth, the Cologne go into the break. With Louis Schaub (up to 57th minute) and Florian Kainz (up to 71st), but without the ailing Dejan Ljubicic, the home side won 1-0 (0-0) against VfB Stuttgart. Anthony Modeste scored the winning goal in the 88th minute. It was the eleventh goal of the season for the Frenchman, who had previously missed numerous chances.

Stuttgart, on the other hand, spends Christmas on the relegation site and is now longing for the complete recovery of the long-injured offensive stars Silas Katompa Mvumpa and ÖFB team striker Sasa Kalajdzic.
