Dutch cycling champion Pieters is in artificial sleep after head surgery

Successful Dutch cyclist Amy Pieters injured her head when she fell to a training camp in Calpe, Spain. According to her SD Worx team, the 30-year-old rider will be kept in artificial sleep for several days after the operation at the hospital in Alicante, where she was transported by helicopter.

“During the operation, the doctors removed the pressure in the head, which was created by the fall. When it wakes up in a few days, it will be possible to evaluate any damage,” the Dutch team said in a statement. Her family went to the hospital to see Pieters. “Nothing else can be said about the accident at this time. We would like to ask everyone to respect the privacy of the participants. Of course, everyone on the team is currently thinking about Amy and her family,” said representatives of SD Worx, which Pieters has been driving for since 2017.

This year, Pieters won, among other things, the Dutch title on the road. On the track, she and Kirsten Wild became world champions for the third time in a pair scoring race. The year before last, she won the mass start race at the European Road Championships and is also the world champion in the mixed time trial from 2019.
