Loh Kean Yew from Singapore won the World Badminton Championships in the men’s singles category on Sunday.

In two sets, the newly crowned world champion Srikanth Kidambi from India beat the figures 21-15, 22-20.

On the way to the final, the Singaporean first cost Viktor Axelsen the further participation in the tournament, and subsequently Anders Antonsen had to see himself beaten in the semifinals on Saturday.

Loh Kean Yew, who is number 22 on the world rankings, started the tournament as unseeded.

Srikanth Kidambi otherwise came out aggressively for the showdown and therefore got the best start with a 9-4 lead in the first set. But Loh Kean Yew was going to come after that.

Especially the Singaporean’s strong net play became crucial as he ended up taking the first set 21-15.

In the second set, it was again the Indian who came out best from the start. Kidambi was even close to taking the set, but a strong finish sent the overall win to Singapore.

In the first round, Loh Kean Yew delivered the biggest surprise of the tournament when he beat Viktor Axelsen. In the semifinals, Antonsen lost in two sets to Loh with the numbers 21-23, 14-21.

Antonsen must – like the Danish men’s doubles Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen – travel home with a bronze medal.

A number of other finals at the World Badminton Championships were also held on Sunday.

The men’s doubles He Ji Ting and Tan Qiang from China, who knocked out the Danes, lost their final to Japanese Yugo Kobayashi and Takuro Hoki.

On the women’s doubles side, Chinese Jia Yi Fan and Chen Qing Chen won gold, while Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi took care of the victory in the women’s singles category.
