Canyoning adds beneficiaries thanks to the Fondeporte project

The K2 Sports Club teaches downhill courses in ravines, aimed at young people between 15 and 29 years old.

Canyoning is a discipline that is becoming increasingly popular in the Antofagasta Region and that in the Antofagasta commune considers the streams of the Coviefi and La Chimba sectors among its places of execution. It is a dynamic sport that combines hiking and climbing.

The K2 Sports Club, through the National Fund for the Promotion of Sports 2021, (Fondeporte) is developing an ambitious project that seeks to spread the safe practice of this adventure sport in the commune, as well as teach a group of users the techniques of descent in ravines.

Carabiners, anchor ropes, ropes, harness, in addition to personal protection elements, are part of the basic equipment required to lower the cliffs, whose heights can range between 10 and 30 meters.

Mirko Eterovic, instructor and person in charge of the project promoted by the K2 Sports Club, said that “During the development of the canyoning course, in addition to teaching concepts typical of the high mountains and conyoning, we gave the students knowledge related to first aid, rescue, evacuation, emergency relief, among others.”

Currently, there are 11 students who are benefiting from this initiative. Nicole Ossandón is one of them and affirms that this “It is a very entertaining discipline that gives us many values such as teamwork, camaraderie and puts us to the test, knowing that we can do certain things if we dare.” His partner, Raimundo Allende, comments that “I like the hill and the adrenaline that both the descent and the ascent generates, so I am doing this regularly”, while Walter Anticao, argues that “This sport is entertaining, the instructor explains very well and the classes are very informative.”

The Seremi del Deporte, Roberto Meza, explained that “It is very important that these types of emerging sports continue to be developed since they help more people to acquire different values through physical activity.” He added that through the Fondeporte 2021 contest – which benefited 20 sports organizations in the region – “We are promoting various activities focused on tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, judo, table tennis, among others, which benefit hundreds of people.”
