Álex Sanmartín, runner-up of Spain of more than 100 kilos

Álex Sanmartín, from the Judo Club Coruña, was proclaimed in Madrid runner-up in Spain in the category of more than one hundred kilos. In a championship that elevated Galicia, with the gold for autonomy, the Coruñés was once again confirmed as one of the best athletes at the national level among the largest judokas.

The winners also include two competitors with ties to the city. One is the Olympian Alberto Gaitero, champion in 73 kilos, one of the scholarship holders from the Coruña Council. The other is Estrella López, who climbed to the top of the podium at 52 kilos and belongs to the Judo UDC team.

Almost all the best national judokas compete for Galicia. And that has been noticed in the results of the Spanish Championship. The titles of Gaitero and López were joined by those of David García Torné in 66 kilos, Tristan Mosakhlishvili in 90 kilos and Nikoloz Sherezadiskvili in 100 kilos and Laura Martínez’s silver in 48 kilos. In addition to Sanmartín, only another athlete born in Galicia made the list of medalists and it was the great success of Laura Vázquez from Vigo. The one who is runner-up in the junior world achieved her first title in 63 kilos at an absolute level.

These results join those achieved by the children and cadets with six Coruña medals, three for Arteixo (gold from Anderson Cotón and silver from Alejandro Patiño and Natalia Rodríguez) and three for the Judo Club Coruña (silver from Pablo Rico and Jorge bronzes Álvarez and Ricardo Lestón).
