After a ten-year break, a Latvian athlete will take part in the Dakar Rally again

The Dakar Rally has been running since 1979 and was only canceled once in 2008 due to political circumstances. Historically, the rally took place on the Paris-Dakar route, but due to various circumstances, locations have changed from Europe and Africa to South America in recent years, but this time it will take place in Saudi Arabia.

At the beginning of the 21st century, several Latvian motorists have participated in these challenging races with varying degrees of success. The best achievement of Latvians in the Dakar Rally is the sixth place won by motorcyclist Jānis Vinters in 2007. As it is known, the Latvians were the first to take the electric car to the Dakar Rally OSCar EO. The electric rally car was driven by Andris Dambis, but the helmsman was Māris Saukāns.

“It is a great pleasure that after a long time the name of Latvia will be in the Dakar Rally, it is a pride not for me alone, but for all of us – for us as a country,” Didzis Zariņš was quoted as saying. “When Antan spoke to me about becoming his co-pilot, I didn’t have to think long, I immediately agreed, because this adventure is unforgettable and every Dakar remains a vivid memory.”

“Antans will be in Dakar for the 13th time and he is one of the most experienced Lithuanian riders. I am glad that we will be able to conquer the Saudi desert together and I believe that we will be able to start successfully together,” Zariņš added. “The Lithuanian CREDIT team is experienced and it will be a new challenge to enjoy the work of our neighboring team, compare and exchange experiences.”

Didzis Zariņš has participated in the Dakar Rally five times, but the best position is the 26th place together with Andris Dambis.

Zariņš also participated in the “Transorientale Rally” in 2008 and won the sixth place, “Silk Way Rally” in 2009 – the sixth place, participated in the “Baja de France” in 2007 and won the second place. He was a Latvian rally champion. Latvian motorsport master and Latvian champion “adventure endure”.

The 2022 Dakar Rally is scheduled for January 2-14.
