Africa Cup of Nations 2022 – Nigeria football team coach Gernot Rohr sacked ahead of CAN

Gernot Rohr is no longer Nigeria coach. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) sacked the national team coach on Sunday, in the hot seat for several weeks after a succession of poor results.

Rohr, 68, had been training the Nigerian Eagles since August 2016 and his contract ran until December 2022. This news comes one month before the opening of the next African Cup of Nations which will be played in Cameroon.

An immediate interim solution

Relations between the Nigeria Football Federation and Mr. Rohr ended“, said its president Mohammed Sanusi in a statement.”We thank him for his service to the Super Eagles and Nigeria.“, adds the same source.

Rohr, who previously coached Girondins de Bordeaux and Eintracht Frankfurt, led the Nigerian national team to the 2018 World Cup and to 3rd place in the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

If the Eagles have already secured their qualification for the African Cup next year in Cameroon, they have recently suffered several defeats. It is the former coach of the team, Augustine Eguavoen, who will replace him immediately. The new coach will be able to count on the technical support of three former members of the selection: Augustine ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Garba Lawal. In its press release, the NFF specifies that it is an interim, the time to find a new technician.
