A Christmas of yesteryear

Gijón will be the scene throughout the month of December and the first days of January of an extensive sports program that includes a total of sixteen activities and competitions aimed at all ages and that were presented yesterday by José Ramón Tuero, Councilor for Sports of the City Council of Gijón.

Children under 12 years of age will have activities specially designed for them, which will take place in the municipal swimming pools, the El Llano-Contrueces sports complex and the Astur Horse Riding Club. All of them will require prior registration, which can be done from tomorrow, day 2, through the activities.gijon.es website or at the Citizen Services offices throughout the city. Prices vary from 2.40 to 17 euros depending on the chosen activity.

The bulk of the program is made up of ten sports events. The first will be from 4 to 6 with the dispute of the international cyclocross “Villa de Gijón”, which will take place in Las Mestas and in which the participation of around 400 cyclists from eight countries is expected. The Women’s Race returns to the program, one of the tests that could not be held last year due to the pandemic and that this time will take place on the 12th.

The Astur Equestrian Club will host three events. The first, the national final of the Pony Champions Cup, which will take place on the 18th and 19th. The second, the traditional Christmas Jumping from 27 to 29 and 28, in addition, there will be a horseball exhibition. On the 24th, one of the key events will take place every Christmas: the 34th edition of the popular Christmas Eve race organized by the Estadio Gijón club and the Municipal Sports Board. This year there will be 2,200 numbers for the adult race and 800 for the minor categories

One day later, another of the essential appointments in the program: the Christmas Cruise, which this year is sponsored by LA NUEVA ESPAÑA, and which will be held at the Puerto Deportivo.

The La Calzada sports complex hosts a tennis tournament and a paddle tennis tournament. The first will be on the 26th and 27th, and the second on December 26th and January 2nd.

Finally, the year will close with the 52nd edition of the San Silvestre organized by the Municipal Sports Board and Gijón Atletismo, and according to José Ramón Tuero “we want it to be as similar as possible to the ones before the pandemic” . In this way, there will be 2,000 places for minor races and 5,000 for adults.

To this sports program is added the already usual act of recognition by the City Council to the sport of Gijón and that will take place in the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista on the 23rd.
