Wheelchair Basketball: Briantea84 wins the XX Italian Super Cup

The UnipolSai Briantea84 Cantù wins the XX edition of the Italian Super Cup in the final played in Meda on the afternoon of Sunday 21 November: beaten theS. Stefano review at the end of a match addressed during a practically perfect second quarter. This is the fifth consecutive success of the canturini in the event, the sixth in its history. For S. Stefano it is the third defeat in a row in a competition he has never managed to win so far.

After a first quarter of perfect balance, closed on 12 all, but only because Enrico Ghione, for a long time the best of S: Stefano, misses two free throws with the time trial stopped, he is the second set to dig the furrow between the two teams that will later result decisive in the end. The Briantea84 changes quintet, deploys the four longs and S. Stefano does not seem to have adequate defensive weapons to counter the opponents, who grind in attack and raise the intensity in defense. The result is a partial monstre of 25 to 5 points that launches the Lombards up to 39 to 22 of the long interval.

The third quarter, after a timid reaction from S. Stefano, appears to confirm the inertia all to the advantage of the hosts, driven by a finally crowded and noisy PalaMeda. Samuele Cini among the guests he enters well from the bench and surprises for personality and shooting accuracy, but a three game (later not completed) by the captain Jacopo Geninazzi it’s a unsportsmanlike foul of the former Davide Schiera seem to definitively close the question.

Instead, in the fourth quarter the fresh winners of the Italian Cup prove to be a team of character, placing a decidedly unexpected partial given the progress of the match so far: Andrea Giaretti he plays the charge with a couple of heavy triples, the errors from the Briantea84 line and an evident defensive drop in tension give courage to the guests, who gnaw point by point, up to only one possession away. In the end, however, the comeback is not complete, partly because S. Stefano physically pays for the great effort, partly because Briantea puts up a couple of heavy baskets with Carossino e Papi which in fact close the games.

The performance of the blue captain is of a high level Filippo Carossino, author of 18 points but above all a constant emotional point of reference on the pitch for his teammates, despite a not very brilliant start to shooting. For the guests, in addition to the aforementioned Samuele Cini, the overall performance of Enrico Ghione, the last to give up among his own.
So 2021 ends here for wheelchair basketball club teams. Now space for the national team of coaches Carlo Di Giusto, which will meet in Cassino on 25 November before leaving for Madrid, where the European Championships are scheduled from 4 December.
