Villanueva de La Vera, historical artistic complex

Visiting the Comarca de la Vera, their houses have caught our attention. This is what is called “Verata popular architecture.” Although we can find it in any of its towns, the one that has best known how to preserve this architecture is Villanueva de la Vera, which in 1982 was declared a historical-artistic complex in its entirety.

Their houses are characterized by having two or three floors to make better use of the available land and also have insulation from soil moisture, with the ground floor of masonry and timber framing and adobe the upper floors. These have sun beds to take advantage of the sun and wide overhangs to protect themselves from the rain.

The ground floor was generally used for the stable or warehouse. The bedrooms were located on the second floor, and the kitchen was located on the third.

Being a relatively fragile building system, they were grouped together, leaving narrow and gloomy alleys between them, many of them dead ends.

Its streets are furrowed by the typical gullies in the middle of the street, forming mini-rivers, whose purpose is to channel the waters through the town until it reaches the orchards that are below it.

It is a pleasure to walk through its streets, studying every detail, surprising us with every corner, clearly a show for architecture lovers.
