The Play-Offs in Belgium remain a point of discussion in our football. It has many proponents, but also major opponents. Peter Vandenbempt also doesn’t seem to be a fan of the whole system right away.
Quite a few opponents of the system would rather get rid of the Play-Offs, while the proponents indicate, among other things, that Belgian football has become better thanks to those Play-Offs. “I don’t think we have become so much better because of the play-offs,” Vandenbempt says at Sports/Football Magazine.
According to him, there is only one reason for this improvement: money. “It has nothing to do with that system, but with the television contract, which brings in a hundred million instead of thirty million euros,” it sounds.
And the point of discussion that TV rights holders pay just as much money for our football because of the Play-Offs is not correct, according to Vandenbempt. “TV rights holders have always told me whether or not Play-Offs matter to them,” he reveals.
