Two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogacar: “Longer climbs at higher altitudes don’t suit me” | cycling

cyclingTadej Pogacar has revealed his weakness. The 23-year-old Slovenian, winner of the last two editions of the Tour de France, says he can certainly ‘break’ quickly on longer climbs and in thin air if his competitors attack him.

“My competitors don’t have to be afraid of me, really,” Pogacar said this week, when he was a guest on cyclist Geraint Thomas’ podcast and asked about his aura of invincibility. “I can break very quickly. On climbs that are not that long, I can ride a good pace. But sometimes the longer climbs at high altitudes don’t suit me. But I think they already know that,” said the Slovenian, referring to his competitors.

According to Pogacar, he could also get into trouble if strong teams like Ineos and Jumbo-Visma attack him from long before the finish. “Then it becomes difficult. I don’t think it’s that hard to attack and break me.”

Last year, Pogacar won the Tour by knocking his compatriot Primoz Roglic out of the yellow jersey on the penultimate day in the climbing time trial. This year he already laid the foundation for his second overall victory in the first serious mountain stage, in which he was well behind his competitors.

Pogacar was not only allowed to wear the yellow jersey in Paris, but also the polka dot jersey (for the best climber) and the white jersey (best young person). He also took bronze at the Olympic Games in Japan and won two classics with Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy.
