They present the Mexico Open 2022 golf tournament as part of the PGA Tour

MEXICO CITY.- The Mexico Open 2022 was presented this Monday by Grupo Salinas, the Mexican Golf Federation (FMG) and the PGA Tour. They announced that it will be held from April 28 to May 1, 2022, in Vidanta Vallarta. It will be part of the PGA Tour 2021-22 program, previously this date was celebrated as the WGC – Mexico Championship.

“We present the most important professional tournament of the FMG. This tournament that, as of next year, is going to take a spectacular turn by having the best players on the planet in its field and being known around the world as the Mexico Open. We are very happy because in this Open there will be protagonists and serious aspiring to win, both Carlos Ortiz, Abraham Ancer and more Mexicans ”, said Eng. Fernando Lemmen Meyer, president of the FMG, during the press conference.

The Mexico Open has as its origin the Mexican Golf Open, which dates back to 1944 and is considered the most traditional tournament in Mexico. In 2022, the merger of what was the WGC – Mexico Championship and the Mexican Golf Open will be the Mexico Open.

“It is going to stop being a WGC, it will be a Mexico Open. It is a ‘news’ because there will be much more Mexicans playing, more Latinos. It is a tournament that is going to grow and is going to support golf much more, ”said 2020 Houston Open champion golfer, Carlos Ortiz.

For his part, world champion Abraham Ancer highlighted how positive it is to see more and more children playing golf and that they can experience a world-class event up close.

“It is very nice to see the number of children in tournaments here in Mexico; But in other parts of the world I always see Mexican flags, something that maybe a few years ago you didn’t see so much (…) It feels nice to be part of something like that. It has always been an honor for me to represent my country and feeling the support of all of you helps a lot, “said Ancer.

The best golf in the world can be appreciated closely from more places in Mexico, Benjamin Salinas Sada, Vice President of the Board of Directors of Grupo Salinas, spoke about it.

“We are convinced of the importance of taking this type of event to other corners of the country and thereby sending a clear message; golf is not owned by a few, it belongs to everyone: that is what we will always defend at Grupo Salinas ”, he stated.

In addition, the fact of bringing events of global significance benefits local commerce; something that Iván Chávez, Executive Vice President of Grupo Vidanta highlighted.

“We are delighted that Vidanta Vallarta is hosting this magnificent Mexico Open event. We are sure that it will generate a very important economic spill for Bahía de Banderas, both in Jalisco and in Nayarit. All hotels in the area, taxi drivers, restaurateurs, tour guides, all small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in the region will benefit ”, he said.

Furthermore, the Mexico Open 2022 will appear on the PGA Tour calendar for the first time as an official FedExCup event, offering 500 FedExCup points to the winner and a $ 7.3 million purse. The 132-player field will include 12 exemptions, with at least four players from Latin America.

“We have worked closely with Grupo Salinas since the start of the Mexico Championship in 2017. As hosts of the tournament, Grupo Salinas has always conducted itself first class in all aspects, making this stop a favorite among our players while entertainment is provided to fans in Mexico and around the world, ”shared John Norris, Senior Vice President of Tournament Business Affairs for the PGA Tour.

The Mexico Open 2022 will offer the public new surprises, sports excellence, high-level entertainment and a great gastronomic offer.
