“One motivation is to show that to the competitors: your fucking money is not enough,” he said in a podcast titled “11 Lives – The World of Uli Hoeness.”

Hoeness compares the money that he had at his disposal as Bayern president and that of PSG president Al Khelafi and says that, while he had worked to achieve it, the president of the French club was given it as a gift.

“The difference between him and me is that while I had to work hard for the money I have, they gave it to him,” said Hoeness on the podcast, which said: “When he wants a player then he travels to his emir.”

Hoeness criticizes both PSG and Manchester City, owned by an Abu Dhabi investment group and recalls that, despite Arab financial backing, they have failed to win the Champions League.

“Neither team has a single Champions League title. Not one. And they will continue to lose against us. Not always, but sometimes when we win, I will be brutally happy. That should be our goal,” he said.

Bayern won the 2020 Champions League final 1-0 against PSG and were eliminated by the French team in the quarter-finals last season after losing 2-3 in Munich and winning 1-0 in Paris. It is not the first time that Hoeness has lashed out at PSG and City. A few months ago, he caused controversy with statements about the way in which City proceeded when it needed to sign a player.

He also criticized the City

“My friend Pep Guardiola told me that when he needs a player he calls the sheikh and he raises the price of gas,” he said at the time. Guardiola spent three seasons at Bayern with Hoeness as president before moving to City.

Hoeness is regarded as the architect of Bayern’s current financial might for his tenure first as sporting director and then as president. In discussions about the financial advantages that Bayern has over other German teams, Hoeness always remembered that the Bavarian club’s money had been generated by playing football and did not come from gifts from a foreign investor.

Hoeness has been with Bayern since his time as a player and became a civil servant at the age of 29, when his active career ended with a knee injury. One of his hallmarks has always been his controversial statements about competitors inside and outside Germany, often on the eve of an important commitment.
