Tennis Star Peng Shuai Admits Harassed by Chinese Office, Beijing Silences Page all

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – China has not responded to allegations by world tennis star Peng Shuai, who claims he was harassed by top officials there.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has called for Peng’s allegations to be investigated fully, publicly and without cover-up.

Players and former players also spoke, and voiced the fate of the former Wimbledon and Roland Garros champions of the doubles sector.

Beijing, through foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, was asked about the issue at a regular press conference.

“I haven’t heard about the issue you’re talking about,” Zhao said AFP Monday (15/11/2021).

Zhao argued the news was not a diplomatic issue, and did not answer about the fate of the former world number one doubles.

Previously, Peng Shuai was in the spotlight in early November for admitting to being a victim of sexual harassment.

The Chinese official who harassed him was Zhang Gaoli, who was the deputy prime minister from 2013 to 2018.

Details of Peng’s allegations did not appear on the internet “Panda State”, where a search of their names on the main portal yielded no results.

The search for the 35-year-old’s account on Weibo has also disappeared, although it can still be accessed via direct web link.

The Chinese tennis association also did not respond when the news agency AFP trying to get their feedback.

In his writings, Peng claimed that Zhang often asked him to have sex, and their relationship had its ups and downs over the years.

The post was immediately deleted on Weibo, with many screenshots and claims less than verifiable.

China’s censorship department quickly removed evidence of the report, with Peng Shuai also unknown.
