StageUp – Serie A loses fans: -2.6% in 2 years. Boom for basketball

Lovers of the ball in wedges in Italy exceed 6 million: Olimpia Milano is close to 20%. Removed the big players, football in difficulty

Serie A football loses fans, while Serie A basketball sees an increase in the number of its aficionados. This can be seen from a research conducted by StageUp and Ipsos which analyzed the trend of typhus in the last year, putting it in relation to the 2018-2019 season, the last pre-pandemic. According to the results, Serie A basketball fans rose to 6.04 million, recording an increase of 7.6% while Serie A football fans drop by 2.6%, amounting to 24.6 million.

In basketball, the average number of fans per club increased by 14.8%, while that of football stood at 259,000 per team, excluding the top five teams: Juventus, Inter, Milan, Naples and Rome. This means that, taking away the giants of Serie A, the cheering potential of Serie A basketball clubs is higher than that of top football clubs. A few numbers: Olimpia Milano has seen its supporters increase by 18.9% in two years, reaching 1,651,000 supporters; Virtus Bologna, champion of Italy, for its part, can count over 250 thousand more fans than Sinisa’s Bologna Mihajlovic.
