Aloña Mendi, Atlético de San Sebastián, Bidasoa, Easo, Izarraitz and Tolosaldea will compete from this Thursday in the LXV Absolute Winter Spanish Championship for a 25-meter pool. The event, in which 14 girls and 8 boys from clubs in Gipuzkoa participate, will be held until Sunday at the Son Hugo facilities in Palma de Mallorca, without an audience to comply with the Covid-19 protocol.

The Easo swimmer Maider Redin, Basque record holder in 50 and 100 butterfly both in short and long, is the biggest candidate to get on the podium. The San Sebastian is the last champion of Spain of 50 butterfly after achieving gold in the state championships this past summer. His times to beat will be 27.22 in 50 butterfly and 59.80 in the hectometer of the modality.

As for the rest of the Gipuzkoans, the Bidasoa arrives weighed down by the absence of the sisters Ainhoa ​​and Leire Martín, who this season train and study in the US, as well as that of Ander Arruabarrena who joins his brother Unai and competes for the Sant Andreu, and some other male casualties. Kepa Aldekoa and Ane Madina are the swimmers who come from the Aloña Mendi club; Maier Lizarzaburu will do it for Izarraitz and Lide Marquet for Atlético de San Sebastián.

The competition can be followed live by streaming, although for the first time the Spanish Swimming Federation will charge two euros to be able to watch each day. The federation alleges that this initiative is carried out in order to “maintain the production and visibility of our championships as of this season and that all fans have the option to follow them without having to travel.”
