Sam Torrance reveals the name of who should be future Ryder Cup captain for Europe

Sam Torrance has revealed who he thinks he should be captain of Europe in the next Ryder Cup in order to coach a squad made up of a large contingent of young players.

Victorious captain at Belfry in 2002, the Scotsman Sam Torrance believes that the Englishman Lee Westwood is best suited to succeed Padraig Harrington in Rome in 2023.

Torrance explained: “With a lot of young players, Europe needs someone like Lee Westwood to lead them in the next edition. He is still a great player and he enjoys a good rating among young people who know him since he is still present on the circuit. It is absolutely essential. ”

The fact that Westwood recently won again at the highest level is crucial for the Scotsman who refers to the Briton’s victory in Race to Dubai last year. His third victory on the order of merit of the European Tour.

“Someone who won decades ago won’t mean much to a current generation of ambitious young people.” he asserts.

Not irremediable

Following the landslide victory of the United States 19-9 in Wisconsin in September, the fear of the European clan is to see the opening of a new era of American domination.

However, Torrance – who also believes Fred Couples should be the next captain for the United States – disagrees.

“I’m not worried about Team Europe”, he added. “It’s another new era coming but I think with the Højgaard twins, Guido Migliozzi and Hovland, we have some fantastic young players who are going to take up the torch and it’s very exciting.”

“This year’s American team was the strongest I have seen in a long, long time. It’s often been said that the 1981 team was the best on the American side, but I think the 2021 team surpasses it. It was difficult to predict such a large margin, but you could feel a great cohesion so the result did not surprise me. ”

To conclude on the subject Sam Torrance also explained that he was not in favor of a change in the qualification process.
