Lime. – A delegation of 160 athletes will represent Peru in the I Cali-Valle 2021 Junior Pan American Games. The Peruvian delegation will compete against nearly 3,500 athletes from 41 countries in the largest sports competition on the continent for young people to be held in the Colombian Pacific, between Thursday, November 25 and Sunday, December 5, 2021.
The athletes, who come from various seedbeds and clubs, have been preparing throughout the year in different competitions for this youth event. In the Peruvian case, athletics will have the largest delegation (17 athletes), according to the list defined by the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP).
These youth Games will deliver direct quotas to the champions in individual sports for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. The 160 athletes and staff that will travel with the delegation have gone through the two-dose vaccination process, complying with the requirement established by the organizers of the contest. As part of the national representation, 20 athletes from the Club de Regatas “Lima” will be present in 10 sports. Next, get to know the record of the athletes trained in the ‘Regatas’:
1. Alexia Sotomayor (15 years old): A promising young swimmer in the country, nothing in competitions since the age of 5 and has surpassed the national marks 70 times. A week ago, Alexia won three gold medals and one silver in the Lima 2021 South American Water Sports Championship and also aims for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. 2. Gonzalo Bueno (17 years old): In the Tennis team, Bueno will participate in the individual, doubles and mixed categories. The national racket is the only Peruvian that has conquered the prestigious 61 Junior Bonfiglio 2021 tournament, held last July in Italy.
3. Ignacio Sánchez Bringas (22 years old): Recognized athlete and has been the South American Under 20 champion in Guyana 2017. He participated in the combined events of the Decathlon.
4. Nicolás Bourouncle (19 years old): In Karate, Nicolás has been Champion in the USA OPEN 2019 Tournament, in the U-16 and U-17 Elite category. In the Pan American Games, he will participate in the Kumite – 67 KG modality, from December 3 to 5.
5. Ángel Acevedo Sosa (21 years old): In the Rowing team, Ángel obtained a gold medal at the South American Youth Games 2018 and is champion of the Bolivarian Games Santa Marta 2017. He will compete between December 1 and 5 in Lake Calima.
6. César Cipriani Robles (20 years old): César is the 2021 National Champion, in Rowing. Together with Ángel Acevedo, they are part of the 10-person team that Peru has in its rowing team.
7. Rafael Gálvez Zeuner (21 years old): Rafael is the only representative in the Squash delegation. He is the South American U-17 Champion, in Paraguay 2017; and obtained the bronze medal in the Pan-American U-23 Championship, in Colombia 2021. In his individual competition, he will participate in the Cali Country Club between November 26 and December 2.
8. Lucía Llerena Llosa (20 years old): She is the only Peruvian representative in Windsurfing. Lucía is South American Champion Techno Class 293 (2015). Compete from December 2 to 5, 2021.
9. Volleyball equipment. In the national volleyball team, of the 12 athletes, the ‘Regatas’ contributes 4 athletes: Giulia Montalbetti Gómez de la Torre, Kiara Montes García, Thaisa Mcleod Alva and Flavia Montes Passalacgua. They make up the champion team of the 2020 Women’s Volleyball Superior League.
10. Diego Mini Cuadros (22). Diego is a silver medalist in Badminton Doubles at the 2018 South American Games in Cochabamba.
11. Fernanda Saponara Rivva (20). Fernanda is a bronze medalist in Badminton Singles, in the Pan American U19 Championship Canada 2019.
12. Inés Castillo Salazar (21). Inés is a bronze medalist in Badminton Doubles, of the 2018 Pan American Championship Guatemala.
13. Florencia Chiarella Salas (18). She will be the only Laser representative in the Peruvian delegation. She was in third place, in the Women’s category, of the 2021 South American Laser Championship.
14. Rafaela Fernandini Erazo (20). Rafaela is a multi-medalist in the 2021 National Championship by Category and Absolute Swimming.
15. Ricardo Espinosa Willig (19). Ricardo is a multi-medalist in the 2021 National Swimming Category and Absolute Championship.
16. Ignacio Buse Acurio (17). Ignacio is a silver medalist in the International Orange Bowl – USA 2020 Tennis Tournament.
17. Lucciana Pérez Alarcón (16). Lucciana is a bronze medalist in the Eddie Herr-USA 2019 World Tennis Tournament.
