[Reuters]–The American basketball association (NBA) Celtics center Enes Kanter (29) has changed his surname to “Freedom,” the US sports website “The Athletic” reported on the 28th.

According to media reports, Turkish-born Canter will acquire US citizenship on the 29th, and will be officially named “Enes Kanter Freedom.”

Canter has been active as a social movement and human rights activist for several years. Turkey’s President Erdogan has been protesting the administration, calling him “Hitler of the Century.” In 2019, the Turkish government issued an arrest warrant for Canter as a member of a terrorist group.

Recently, he criticized the human rights issue of the Chinese government preparing for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. He has also called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to change venues and criticized Nike, a major US sports equipment company, for doing business in China.
