In mid October, MLB announced that a project was being worked on so that minor league players would no longer pay accommodation directly from their salary towards the 2022 season, putting on the table that the 30 teams had to provide it.
On Thursday afternoon, MLB made official the new rule that Minor league players will be entitled to free accommodation whatever level they are in before they hit the big team.
Minor League Housing Policy is designed to provide minor leaguers, with limited exceptions (i.e. players with Uniform Major League Baseball Player Contracts or those scheduled to earn six-figure salaries in the Minor League for an entire season), lodging while they are playing or practicing. at any level of Professional Development License.
This program is the next phase in Major League Baseball owners’ dedication to address issues that have impacted retail players. The 2021 season was the first to take place under the new player development model that was announced earlier in the year and saw salary increases, better facilities and travel reductions during the season as initial steps.
Major League Baseball has taken a big step towards equity and opportunity, as minor league players have become increasingly outspoken about their working conditions, criticizing the teams for salaries that leave them living day to day, causing financial problems that result from having to allocate three-quarters of their net salary for the rent of a house.
