Mets in talks with Javier Báez

EL NUEVO DIARIO, The Mets introduced Billy Eppler as their new general manager on Friday. Since then, the team has stayed in contact with Puerto Rican Javier Báez, according to a report by SNY’s Andy Martino, who notes that the Puerto Rican is one of the free agents who could reach an agreement soon.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported at the General Managers’ Meetings that Baez’s market was stronger than anticipated. In addition to the Mets, the shortstop has been linked to the Red Sox and Tigers

MLB Network analyst Jon Heyman said Tuesday on the Big Time Baseball podcast that he thinks the Cubs might be interested in a reunion with Baez.

Mets owner Steve Cohen made it clear that he is willing to invest in heavyweight free agents, telling Eppler and President Sandy Alderson they have the green light to seek out the hottest players.
