Robert Lewandowski was amazed at himself. The world footballer crowned his 100th game in the Champions League with three goals in the 5: 2 (2: 1) of Bayern Munich against Benfica Lisbon.

The 33-year-old Pole was of course named “Man of the Match” when the German champions made it to the early round of the last 16 on Tuesday evening. Lewandowski stood out in front of 50,000 spectators in the Allianz Arena from a lively Munich offensive.

Robert Lewandowski: “I never believed I could score so many goals”

“I never believed that I could make so many games in the Champions League – and so many goals and assists,” said the Bayern Munich goalscorer in an interview with Prime Video. He has now scored 81 times in Europe’s premier class. No player has ever had such a quota after 100 Champions League appearances. With Lionel Messi it was 75, with Christiano Ronaldo even “only” 64.

“The quota is impressive,” said coach Julian Nagelsmann: “Now he’s aiming for 100 goals in the Champions League.” In the current season Lewandowski is at the front with eight goals.

Julian Nagelsmann is back from the corona quarantine

After two weeks of corona quarantine, Nagelsmann was not only enthusiastic about Lewandowski when he returned to the stadium. “All in all, it was an incredibly good game for us. Better than the last few weeks – very good control, incredible game speed up front,” praised the coach four days before the top Bundesliga game against SC Freiburg.

Nagelsmann enjoyed being able to cheer and coach again on the sidelines after a two-week absence. “It was fun to watch the guys,” he said. After a negative corona test, he was allowed to leave the domestic isolation on match day. “I also enjoy watching football on TV. But it shouldn’t be my own team anymore. The four games were enough,” he said.

FC Bayern Munich made it into the round of 16 of the Champions League with a 5-2 win against Benfica Lisbon.

Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané also scored against Benfica

In addition to Lewandowski, who missed a hand penalty, the national players Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané met. The goals conceded by Morato and Darwin Nunez for Benfica were annoying and indicative of Munich’s defensive deficiencies, but the bottom line was bearable.

After four wins with 17-2 goals, Bayern can already make a hook under the group stage before the last two games against Dynamo Kiev and FC Barcelona. “It’s been a very good Champions League season so far,” said Nagelsmann. Bayern will go into the knockout phase as one of the title favorites in the new year. “We qualified flawlessly,” said captain Manuel Neuer proudly. (dpa / ank)
