It wasn’t that long ago that Leroy Sané ran to the national team as a painted polar bear. For his appearance in a designer coat, there was heavy criticism at the time. Sané would set his priorities wrong, it was said. The image of the unapproachable professional who had long since lost all reference to reality spread quickly. And from then on his game was dissected even more.

Alleged experts turned every weakness of form into a question of character. Sané is a virtuoso without a fighting spirit. He lacks the last bile to make it to the top. That was the widespread consensus. After his first season at Bayern, most felt confirmed in their assumption.

And yet it comes as a surprise that Sané of all people is now one of the faces of the FCB vaccination campaign. Before the Champions League game at Dynamo Kiev, he publicly advertises it again: “I have been vaccinated myself and someone who stands for it.”

He also expresses his point of view towards the unvaccinated in the team. “I already mentioned it to Serge. Of course I want you to be in the squad, to be on the pitch with us and to be able to help us.”

And further: “They are important players for us. We as a team want to have them with us, there is no question about that. But I respect your decision. We have already said everything about it. The players know how things are going.”

The clear words underline his gained self-confidence. The 25-year-old seems ready for more responsibility. Even if the step to becoming an eloquent spokesman is still a long one.

Because the press conference also revealed one thing: Such an appearance is still uncharted territory for Sané. Many a bumpy answer suggested that.
