Résumé
Goal
To assess the risk of ACL rupture in judoka.
Methods
The risk of ACL rupture is particularly high in certain sports, including football, handball, and basketball. The incidence is higher in women than in men. To date very few studies concern judo. We conducted a prospective study for six years in young high-level judokas (16 years old) concerning this type of lesion and looked for a possible relationship with the results of the isokinetic evaluation of the knee, in concentric mode.
Results
The injury rate is very high, and roughly the same for men and women (12.5%). We did not find any hamstring – quadriceps imbalance in the injured group. However, the ratio is lower, at rapid speed, in injured women. The heavier athletes, and who have a higher fat mass, have a greater risk of rupture. It is women who are most affected.
Conclusion
These findings should make it possible to propose adapted prevention programs, as is already proposed for other sports such as volleyball.
Abstract
Aims
The purpose of this study was to estimate the risk of ACL rupture in top level judo athletes.
Methods
The risk of ACL rupture has been widely reported, and is higher in some sports as soccer, handball and basketball, particularly in females. But other sports as judo have not been studied. We carried out a prospective 6 years study in young top level males and females judo athletes (16 years old), and compared the results with concentric isokinetic knee evaluation.
Results
The incidence of ACL rupture is very high (12,5%), and approximately the same for males and females. There is no difference in hamstrings/quadriceps ratio between the two groups (rupture or not). But this ratio is slightly lower at high speed in females group with rupture. The heavier athletes, with higher fat mass, (particularly in the females group) are more at risk of rupture.
Conclusion
Preventions programs should be discussed in respect of these preliminary results, as proposed in other sports, as soccer and volleyball.
