In Portugal, 13 cases of omicrons have been detected in a professional football team

In Portugal, 13 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus omicron in a professional football team, the National Institutes of Health said on Monday.

One of the patients from the Lisbon club “Belenenses” recently returned from South Africa, where a form of omicron was first discovered.

The other patients have not been to South Africa, suggesting that this may be one of the first cases of local transmission of omicron outside South Africa.

People who have been in contact with the patient have been instructed to follow the isolation regardless of vaccination status. They will be tested regularly for Covid-19, the institute said.

A variant of omicron was identified by scientists in South Africa a few days ago and little is known about it. However, many countries are in a hurry to act.
