If he wants to, Arjen Robben can fill in for Danny Buijs’ FC Groningen-RKC Waalwijk next weekend. The trainer of the Pride of the North jokes at the press conference about the former attacker’s playing along, in the run-up to his farewell to Groningen.
During the home game with RKC, Robben gets the chance to say goodbye to the Groningen crowd. “If Arjen brings his football boots on Sunday, I can also substitute in the last minutes,” Buijs jokes at a press conference, where he is quoted by Algemeen Dagblad.
Groningen sold more tickets than usual for the match against RKC. That is almost inseparable from Robben’s farewell. “And that’s right,” says Buijs. “If you see what Robben has done for the club, and hopefully will do in the future, he deserves a full Euroborg. He is a club icon.”
“A combination of corona and the limited number of matches that Arjen was able to play last season has meant that he has not been able to say goodbye to the supporters as a player on the field in front of full stands,” says Buijs. “It is therefore great that this can still be done in a different way on Sunday.”
