From dual career to new facilities: Unical is increasingly becoming the sports campus

On November 26, the special program will be presented that allows you to reconcile sports and university careers: eight athletes admitted this year. Meanwhile, the process to build the Citadel of Sport continues

Sports education – its practice and its values ​​- has always been an important part of university education for Unical. The university can already count on a well-equipped sports center, with facilities and equipment for all sports, 40 courses activated, promotional initiatives organized throughout the year.

The objective of the new governance is, however, to make an extra step, enhancing the offer for its students and guaranteeing those who practice sport at a competitive level the opportunity to continue their university studies.

This framework includes the new dual career program, intended for athletes, and the project for the new Cittadella dello Sport, the process of which in these days has reached the final acts before the assignment and start of the works.

A mission, that of the promotion of sport, that the campus wants to share with the entire territory: the planned initiatives are in harmony with the recent appointment of Rende as European City of Sport for 2023.

THE DUAL CAREER PROGRAM

You can be a champion in sport and study, but it is difficult to reconcile the two without flexible training plans. Hence the DUnicAl Career program, reserved for athletes who practice sport at a competitive level and launched in July (here more details on the program).

Eight athletes are admitted to the program for this first edition. The diver belongs to the group Giovanni Tocci, bronze medal at the World Championships (Budapest 2017) and at the European Championships (Budapest 2021) and twice silver medal at the European Championships (London 2016 and Edinburgh 2018) from the 1 meter springboard, with the participation of two Olympic Games. Tocci, already a Unical graduate in Modern Languages ​​and Cultures, has now enrolled in the master’s course in Modern Languages ​​and Literatures. Then there are Giorgia Gloria Fontana, promise of sports dance, which boasts a second place in the national combined at the Italian Championships, enrolled in the degree course in Economics; Giuseppe Franco (Italian Federation of Judo Fight, Karate and Martial Arts), multi-medalized in national and international competitions, which attends the degree course in Educational Sciences; the swimmer Luca Nuzzolo, holder of numerous regional records in the 1,500 freestyle and relay, enrolled in the degree course in Management Engineering. Also among the new freshmen Unical Valentina panza (Mechanical Engineering), multiple medal winner at the FITAV Grand Prix (Italian Shooting Federation) in the Olympic Shooting Pit specialty, which already has seven appearances in the national team; Debora Sala (Chemistry), athlete of the Italian Federation of Judo Fight, Karate and Martial Arts and multiple medal winner at the National University Championships; Pasquale Selvarolo (Mechanical engineering), middle distance runner, fourth classified at the European Under 23 Championships in the 10,000 meters on track (Tallin 2021) and Italian under 23 champion in the 5,000 meters on the track, 10,000 meters on the track and half marathon. Ahmed Semmah, also middle-distance runner, third in the Italian 5,000 meter ranking (Mechanical engineering).

The student-athletes admitted to the program will be presented on November 26th at 4 pm in the aula magna. The meeting will be opened by the institutional greetings of the rector Nicola Leone, Paolo Pizzo (fencer and member of the National Council of Coni, Dual Career referent; two gold medals at the World Championships and two silver medals at the European Championships in the individual competition of the sword, silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics and at the European Championships in the team sword competition) and Paolo Bouquet (president of UniSport Italia).

Giovanni Malagò (president of the Italian National Olympic Committee), Luca Pancalli (president of the Italian Paralympic Committee) and Antonio Dima (president of the Italian University Sports Center) have given their participation in the event and will send their own message of greetings.

The event, in addition to the Olympic athlete Giovanni Tocci, will see the participation, remotely, of the Olympic and Paralympic athletes from Calabria Anna Barbaro, Raffaella Battaglia, Daniele Lavia, Enza Petrilli and Simone Alessio.

THE CITADEL OF SPORT

In the meantime, the process that will lead to the construction of the new Citadel of sport on the campus has almost been completed. The project benefits from regional funding. New facilities will be built to serve the university community, including the athletics track equipped for the Olympic disciplines.
