In a sport like soccer, which cuts across any social stratum, it is common to hear stories as unusual as that of the young man. Omar fields, one of the sensations of the Mexican championship whose name is beginning to sound strongly for the major European leagues. But long before he dazzled his country, the one born in Mexico City began to emerge very early in the streets of Cuauhtémoc, the neighborhood of the capital where he grew up. Such was his talent that Santos Laguna, the First Division club in which he is today the undisputed starter at only 19 years old, recruited him to his quarry to try to fulfill his dream, which was none other than being a professional footballer to improve the conditions of life of his family.

But his adaptation at the Torreón club, in the northeast of the Central American country, was complicated. He was only 13 years old and longed for his parents, his friends, his past life. He tried to return home on several occasions, but his father flatly prevented him. “He spoke to me crying that he wanted to return, but I always told him to stay even though inside I wanted him to be with us”His father recently commented on the ‘Mediotiempo’ web portal.

From a humble family, his father, who apart from his last name shares his first name with his son, drives an Uber in the Mexican capital. Therefore, before making his debut in the elite, when the footballer returned from vacation, or in the toughest stage of the pandemic, he helped him deliver food at home. «When I came to Mexico City, me I put him working with me as a food delivery man so that he would see that life is not easy and he would go to the Uber with me to deliver food. Right now it does not help me because something is not going to happen, but when the pandemic was strong, I went to work and went with me, so that I could see the effort that one makes, ”Omar acknowledged.

After a few years of adaptation, the left-hander began to show his potential in the youth teams of the Verdiblanco team and, inevitably, in January 2021 against Cruz Azul his opportunity came in the first team. Since then, the teenager, who curiously wears the dorsal 190 on his jersey, he is the owner of the left wing of Santos Laguna, a team that currently occupies the fifth position of the Mexican opening tournament.

His level is so high that both the Mexican press and a wide sector of the ‘Tri’ fans publicly requested the summons of the young full-back for the matches of the November team against the United States and Canada corresponding to the qualification for the World Cup. Likewise, the team trained by Gerardo the ‘Tata’ Martino lost both matches and complicates his path to Qatar 2022.

As the pillars that sustained the tricolor team grow older, the Mexican social mass demands a generational change, an injection of fresh blood that can start with promising players of the stature of Omar Campos.
