Eurobasket 2023 | Spain overwhelms Romania and takes the lead

The Spanish women’s basketball team has been imposed on Romania for a forceful 107-52 in their second match of the qualifying round for Eurobasket 2023. A result that allows Miguel Méndez’s stand as Group C leaders with 4 points after two games played.

In this second match of the ‘Méndez era’, Spain was seen to be much more solid and confident than in Thursday’s game against Hungary and that did not lower its intensity in the 40 minutes.

From the beginning, Spain went for the victory although in the first quarter the game was more even. A Spain very coral, with interventions by Irati Etxarri (21 points), Alba Torrens or Silvia Domínguez, he expanded the score against a more individualistic Romania. In his case, it was Stanichi, with 10 points, who kept his team in the fight.

But the Spanish were better and finished the first period with a 5-point advantage (24-19). The only downside was the failures on defense that made the Romanians score easily.

Spain, a gale from the second quarter

And that was precisely what the Spanish team corrected in the second act and he finished deciding the game in his favor.

The success in attack continued (with up to three consecutive triples) and defense failures were minimized. So superior was Spain in this room that Romania only managed to score 8 points in total. Mendez’s, on the other hand, added 22 more points and went to rest with an advantage of 19 points (46-27) although they came to enjoy an income of +21 on several occasions.

The rest did not bring Spain down, which again jumped onto the track very plugged. Stanichi, the best of the Romanians, scored a triple just beginning this time but it was a mere mirage since the Spanish team put the direct towards victory.

Two consecutive triples by Maite Cazorla and the contributions of Irati or María Conde allowed ours to continue increasing the rent. Spain returned to repeat annotation (with 22 more points in this period) and improved in their control to the Romanians who only added seven points in this third quarter. Thus, the final stretch was reached with an advantage of +36 favorable to the Spanish (70-34).

With the victory fully assured, Spain dedicated itself to enjoying the game and continuing to increase income. María Conde continued adding in her particular score and Leticia Romero or Laura Quevedo also stood out from the triple line. Romania, for its part, also improved by playing without pressure and although it scored 14 points in this last period it was clearly surpassed by a Spain that, with 37 points in this act, surpassed the barrier of 100. (107).
