Britain’s Sports Secretary has publicly admitted that the government is considering the possibility of bringing the Ryder Cup back to England for the first time since 2002.
Answering a question from Craig Tracey, MP for North Warwickshire & Bedworth and Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Golf, Nigel Huddlestone, Minister of Sports, admitted that the plans to host the meeting between the USA and Europe in 2031 were well on the table.
«Work is underway for a potential English application to host the Ryder Cup 2031 in England, for the first time since 2002, confided the Minister. the Ministry of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and UK Sport are in close contact with the main partners. Our teams continue to work together to conclude this feasibility work and decide on the next steps ».
The Belfry for the fifth time?
Rumors have been circulating for some time about the plan to bring in the Ryder Cup on a new course near Bolton. But the Minister refrained from identifying precisely the potential routes. He added, however, that he would be prepared to accept an invitation from Craig Tracey to go to his constituency to visit the Belfry.
The iconic Midlands course, recently sold to Goldman Sachs for £ 140million, has already hosted the event four times, the last time in 2002.
2031 is the next available date since the 2023 editions ( Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome) and 2027 (Adare Manor in Ireland) have already been allocated.
