Elise Mertens and Su-Wei Hsieh have qualified for the doubles final at the WTA Finals. The Belgian-Taiwanese duo settled in the semifinals with the Japanese couple Aoyama/Shibahara.

Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara were the second seed in Mexico, but the Japanese duo was clearly no match for Elise Mertens and Su-Wei Hsieh in the semifinals.

Thanks to two breaks, Mertens and Hsieh steamed through to a 5-1 lead in set 1. The Japanese ladies were able to get rid of the first two set points in the 7th game, but Mertens and Hsieh finished it in the next game. After more than half an hour, the score was 6-2.

Also in set 2, Aoyama and Shibahara had to take two breaks early on, although the Japanese also took a serve from the opponent in between. But Mertens and Hsieh were in charge of the game and didn’t let their prey slip anymore.

The first match point was immediately the right one. After Hsieh’s serve, the Japanese return landed in the net. Mertens and Hsieh can now prepare for the final against Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova. The Czech duo was still too strong in the group stage. Time for revenge?
