Bundesliga: Klagenfurt lets Salzburg slip

Turgay Gemicibasi put the hosts ahead in the empty Wörthersee Stadium due to the lockdown in the 30th minute, Markus Pink made the decision ten minutes before the end of regular time (80th). Rasmus Kristensen’s subsequent goal in stoppage time (90 + 1) came too late. With that, a proud series of the defending champions came to an end. Most recently, Salzburg had to admit defeat in the Bundesliga on April 21 at WSG Tirol in Innsbruck.

That didn’t change the clear lead with twelve points ahead of the WAC, but the latest development does not bode well for the rest of the autumn season and the “final” in the Champions League against Sevilla FC in a week and a half: there have been six league games in the last six only one win and two draws, the last six competitive games brought three defeats, two draws and only one “three”.

Short-term changes

Klagenfurt coach Peter Pacult wanted a “sidereal day”, and the wish came true. Salzburg, on the other hand, got the bad news of a slight thigh injury from central defender Maximilian Wöber while warming up before the game, and summer newcomer Kamil Piatkowski had to jump into the deep end. The Pole, who broke his ankle in mid-September, was actually intended for the bank when he made his “lightning comeback”. Apart from that, Jaissle rotated relatively intensely, made four changes compared to Lille.

Daouda Guindo tried his hand at the back four for the first time from the start, Oumar Solet took the place of Jerome Onguene in the defense center and Nicolas Capaldo and Antoine Bernede, who was rarely in demand, joined the team in midfield. As in the past few weeks, Salzburg still found it difficult to put their playful dominance at risk.

Klagenfurt takes advantage of Salzburg’s fatigue

Mohamed Camara fired the first shot on goal for Salzburg from distance (5th), but Florian Rieder also knocked on the other side with a half volley at goalie Philipp Köhn (16th). The lead was therefore not necessarily a surprise, even if some had seen a foul Christopher Cvetkos against Solet while winning the ball. But not referee Gerhard Grobelnik, who checked the scene after VAR intervention. This meant that Gemicibasi’s hit after Assist Pinks was valid.

Because the tiredness due to the dense game schedule could be seen in the guests, the disciplined, physical game of the Carinthians lurking on the counterattack gave them a headache. After all, the opportunities were better: Adeyemi aimed past the far corner after a quick advance (40th), Sesko cheered too early just before the break because he was just offside (42nd).

Dominance does not result in goals

The dominance of the guests was only noticeable after about an hour. As a result of a foul by “Joker” Luka Sucic on 911, Grobelnik decided on a free kick after studying video. That motivated Salzburg additionally, Adeyemi (67th), Sucic after a nice solo (68th) or Sucic again (72nd) gave good chances. The possession of the ball remained high, the brilliant ideas were missing. That was punished bitterly in the finish. Pink completed a quick play over five stations without Salzburg intervention in the penalty area, Köhn maneuvered the admittedly sharp ball into his own goal. Kristensen’s fifth goal of the season in stoppage time came too late.
