Browns cut Odell Beckham Jr., prior to duel against Cincinnati

Catcher Odell Beckham Jr. ran his last route with the Cleveland Browns. Now, it is “unmarked.”

The controversial catcher was released by the Browns after a drama-laden stint that culminated when he was told not to show up for practice.

Beckham’s abrupt departure, not entirely official, came on Friday, on his 29th birthday, a few days after his father shared a video on social media that highlighted the plays in which Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield did not throw passes to the three-time Pro Bowler.

It was the turning point in the often rocky relationship between him and the team.

The Browns did not like the video or that Beckham did not contact Mayfield, who said he was willing to work things out.

Beckham was told not to report to training for two days as his team of representatives negotiated financial terms for his departure with Browns general manager Andrew Berry.

“After careful consideration, internal discussions and discussions with Odell and his representatives, we have determined that it is best for both parties involved if Odell no longer plays for the Cleveland Browns,” Berry said in a statement.

Once both parties agree on the financial terms (Beckham is owed $ 8 million this season), the receiver will be added to the list of transferable players and can be claimed by any other team with enough room under their salary cap. If he is not claimed, he will be a free agent and can sign with any team.

Now that Beckham is gone, the Browns can focus on Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. By coincidence, it was against the Bengals on matchday seven of last season that Odell suffered a knee injury that left him out for the rest of the season.
