Boris Becker takes Davis Cup under fire: “The plan is insane!”

For Boris Becker, the Davis Cup has lost its aura, for two reasons. Not only the termination at the end of the season, but also the mode displeases the three-time Wimbledon champion.

The professionals are now faced with a difficult decision. “Which is more important to me? My career or the Davis Cup?” Says Becker im Eurosport-Podcast in conversation with moderator Matthias Stach. If he were still active himself, he would “ask himself three times whether I want to do this to myself.”

Germany’s top man Alexander Zverev answered the question with “no” months ago and made no secret of his aversion to the new format.

Davis Cup: Nothing is like it was anymore

The German team around team captain Michael Kohlmann is therefore going into the group stage against Serbia and Austria in Innsbruck with Jan-Lennard Struff, Peter Gojowczyk, Dominik Koepfer and the Olympic doubles Kevin Krawietz / Tim Pütz.

Becker questions Davis Cup: “I’m not a fan of this system”

After the investment company Kosmos around the Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué acquired the rights to the Davis Cup, nothing in the traditional competition is like it used to be.

Instead of a co-system over the year with games in the countries, a qualification and final round has been played at the end of the season since 2019. This year in Madrid, Turin and Innsbruck. The group stage and quarter-finals will take place in all three cities, while the semi-finals and finals will only take place in Madrid.

Becker: “I’m not a fan of this system”

From Becker’s point of view, the competition has thus been robbed of a large part of its fascination.

Becker goes on the offensive: “Zverev will be number one in 2022”

“When Belgium plays France in Madrid now, I don’t know how many spectators will come into the hall. I’m not a fan of this system. And I think most players see it similarly,” said the two-time Davis Cup winner . “The last Davis Cup that I experienced in the old structure was as team principal with Germany in Valencia against Spain. That was one of the most beautiful sporting experiences for me. We have to go back there.”

Becker has not given up the dream. “My greatest hope is that the Davis Cup system will change again. Then we will all win.”
