Board election in December: Race for new dual leadership in the Berlin Greens – Berlin

The application period for the new state chairmanship of the Berlin Greens ended on Sunday. According to the statutes, candidates can apply until the party congress (December 12th), but this is not very likely.

Even if the party does not want to announce the applicants until the end of the week, three names are already circulating. What is certain is that there will be a quota of dual leadership again, as spokesman Markus Kamrad said. That means either one woman and one man or two women.

Within the party, Philmon Ghirmai is considered to be the male part. The 37-year-old was born and grew up in Thübingen, is part of the left wing of the party and wants to campaign for a diverse Berlin.

For many marginalized groups, Berlin is the promise “not to be exposed to the danger of blatant discrimination every day (…)”, writes the Neukölln man in his application letter. “As a black person or person of color, it is not a matter of course in Germany to live in a place where diversity is the rule and not the exception (…).”

Among others, Susanne Mertens, district chairwoman of the Greens in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, and Anja Engelmohr, member of the state board and member of the party since the 1990s, are fighting for the second position in the leadership duo. Engelmohr was active for the Greens in working groups at federal and state level. It covers the topics of climate protection, the environment, living and business.

Susanne Mertens comes from the field of corporate management, finance and controlling; she is the spokesperson for the school working group; According to their own statements, their political focus is on education, finance and air traffic.
